#Insights

It has been almost 2 years since I said  'tata' to Oracle..If I look at my bank account , it is almost entirely wiped out..But If I look at those things that I learned and I continue to learn , it is 'abundance'..  I consider it as my own MBA  course,(Student,Professor and Institution all rolled int one) in I which would award myself a Distinction. The only thing that was not that great was that , it was the same 'lethargic and lazy'  me.. Probably I could excuse myself by claiming that creativity requires a bit of laziness.

At first, it was searching in the darkness. Slowly things started to unfold. By now, I have a fair bit of overview about the things which I wanted to know. It is hard to convey everything , but here is a leaf from it.

The first question on any startup journey is to identify that thing that you are going to work on. To identify that thing :-
1. That you are truly passionate about
2. That you can be really good at
3. That has a substantial addressable market
4. That you can substantially differentiate from those which currently cater to the market.

I started out with a project that satisfied 2 and 3 but failed to meet 1 and 4...It was hard lessons. But it was those hard lessons which taught me the above insight.

Another hard learned lesson was that , it is the team that shall takes precedence to the idea...U need to first think about the team that you can assemble , and then start worrying about the idea, else you will be tied to your own limitations..With a great team, you can always think bigger...Another hard learned lesson! If I had known this before , I could have probably avoided the mistake happened with my first project.

The idea which we (or rather, others in the team, for, I am still sipping the bitterness of my first project) are currently working on, satisfies points 1 and 2. We are truly passionate about it, and we believe we can be really good at it..We have a gut feeling  that would satisfy point 3 and 4 . Probably if our gut feeling was right, I could post a happy note in 2014 December and yea, start searching for her :P

It was really a hard time for me to segment the technology market and  to pick up an idea which satisfies (or hopes to satisfy) all the four mentioned points. Here is how I divided the technology industry (for the sake of my own convenience);-

A. Services or the Traditional Technology Consulting Business
B. Technology Products
C. Technology Platforms (specifically Internet Platforms)

Sector A did not match with point 1, and without that, the rest was immaterial.
Sector B did not match with point 2 (sadly no geeks in our team)
Where as Sector C appeared to promise some light.

So it was again an attempt to Segment sector C. Broadly they were classified  into

C1-  Entertainment and Communication Media (Think Youtube or WhatsApp)
C2-  Advertisement (Think AdWords,AdMob etc)
C3-  Retail (Think Amazon,ebay)

The one we have picked up right now (our 'Plan A') is something which appeared to be promising in the  C3 segment. One more idea is being explored in the same segment so that, in case if anything goes wrong with the current one, we have a 'Plan B'.  There is an another idea in the back drop of  my mind which belongs to C1, but I am not fully convinced about it. And in the next two or three months I am going to explore the C2 segment, which I am completely ignorant right now. And if none works, I will have to think about entering Sector B .  Personally I started to hate coding, so sector B is really a distant option.

Well that was a gist of  my two year  research thesis :)

Great things are happening all around...Ever since I had stopped dreaming about batting like Sachin, I had been dreaming about something similar to the Kejriwal Act.. At night, lying in bed, with those fancy thoughts before you fall asleep, I had tried to plot a number of strategies which could possibly amass the people and clean up the democracy. Was really happy and was overwhelmed with joy,  to see those fancy thoughts happening in real, in Delhi.  But I have to shamelessly admit that my fancy strategy was bottom up, but Kejriwal's  was top down..Well, I am finding solace in the fact that he took 10+ years to figure it out.  Happy for myself, happy for Kejriwal and happy for India.

Happy New Year :)

The Right People Jim Collins

“The specifics can vary, even within companies, but our research delivered six important traits that identify ‘the right people’”, Jim Collins, Author of Good to Great and Built to Last (as quoted in BusinessWeek, May 25, 2009.)

1. The right people fit the company’s core values:

People ask: “How do we get people to share our core values?” The answer: Hire people already predisposed to them – and keep them.

2. The right people understand that they do not have “jobs” – they have responsibilities:
The right people can complete the statement, “I am the one person ultimately responsible for…”

3. The right people don’t need to be tightly managed:

When you feel the need to tightly manage someone, you may have made a hiring mistake. You need not spend a lot of time “motivating” or “managing” the right people. It’s in their DNA to be productively neurotic, self-motivated, self-disciplined and self obsessed. Teach them , Yes . Guide them , Yes . Manage them , No

4. The right people fulfil their commitments:

In a culture of discipline, people view commitments as sacred – they do what they say they’ll do,period. They have a 100% hit rate .Equally, this means that they take great care in saying what they will do, careful never to over commit or to promise what they cannot deliver.

5. The right people are passionate about the company and its work:

Nothing great happens without passion. The right people display remarkable intensity.

6. The right people display window-and-mirror maturity:

When things go well, the right people point out the window, giving credit to factors other than themselves; they shine a light on others who contributed. Yet when things go awry, they do not blame circumstances or other people; they look in the mirror and say: “I’m responsible.”

Oh this is crap..

The right people
1. Has the skill set
2. Is passionate about the job/loves the job
and hence will be  Self driven (need no motivation) and takes ownership (need no managing)
4. Fits in culturally

Another point of view from Linkedin CEO..

1. Dreams big
2. Gets shit done
3. Have fun

Dreams And Smiles :)

The other day I was wondering as what are the most important skills that a man or woman should possess. I think it is one's ability to dream and one's ability to keep smiling that matters the most. Keep dreaming  and keep smiling :D

A small update ...

Well there is a lot to write , but it has been extremely hard to figure out where to start ...so a quick update on a few things ....

1. Just turned 26 ... :) and that was an awesome year . It is incredible to look back at the volume of things that I learned in the last year . Perhaps more than putting it as a 'learning' , I would look at it as how much I have 'Broadened my mind' . And this 'Broadening one's mind' is an interesting concept and more on that later .

And perhaps the bigger thing  is ...

2. Sangeeth is IN! ...He has put the papers and will be joining us in a  few days.  So the one person whom I had been missing badly , is finally here ...and that takes the tally to 7...yup 7 founders! And the last time I had heard about such a number is in the Infosys story :D ..... but yea , it is not merely about 7 people coming together ...it is more about what those people want the story they are going to create ...And I am afraid that we as a team are yet to come to a single page in that aspect ..and until we do that , I guess I cannot take pride in this team :(

And

3. Of late, the thoughts of marriage has started to creep in ... all of a sudden , you start to see  daily facebook updates about somebody's engagement or marriage . What terrifies me now is the importance of the decision on whom to marry. A decision which is going to affect every single moment of the rest of your life! I have no clue whatsoever about the criteria by which someone would ideally select his or her life partner .. So I was a bit perplexed when all of a sudden Amma asked me about my preferences . Perhaps the only criteria I had in my mind was 'koode pattini kidakkan  thayyaaraavanam ' , as that is very likely to happen :) Now that is a wonderful requirement to go and ask any girl's father!  And perhaps the other thing I had read  was that 'You do not marry a person. You essentially marry a lifestyle!'  ..And I have felt that to be true!
Any tips ? :D

Heroism , Excellence and Jagism..

This is more like a continuation of the post on real heroes..

To me the world comprises of 3 types of people ..Heroes , Excellent and the rest ...
Heroes comes at the top of the pyramid ...followd by those who are excellent and then comes the rest ..(whom I used to call as JAG (Just  another Guy or Gal))

One of my biggest realisations , as I grow up in my life , was understanding the difference between excellence and heroism ...I realised that people whom we often think as heroes are not heroes but are mere excellent people ..

To me Sunitha Krishnan is a hero ..to me Snadeep Unnikrishnan is a hero ...And to me Sachin is not a hero  ...

It takes much more to be a hero than to be excellent ... Need proof ? Imagine yourself to be  one of the guests who were trapped inside Taj , when the mumbai attacks happend ...You see death right infront of you...And who would be a hero for you if you  manage to survive from that face of the death ? Will it be Amitabh or Sharukh or Rithik or Sachin ?  Or will it be Sandeep Unnikrishnan ?? The very thought of putting yourself in the shoes of somebody like Sandeep  in such situation could send lightning through the nerves ... and you realize what real heroism is ...It takes a lot of love and compassion for others  and that incredible courage that arise out of that love to be hero in ones life .

And when it comes to the matters of child/children , a mother would always be a hero ...In  that way all mothers are heroes in a limited domain...

Then comes the people who strive for excellence  and have attained the same. And if you start to compile a list , it would contain the greats like ARR,Sachin,Lata Mageshkar,RF,Ratan Tata,Naryana Murthy and the numerous others who have made a mark in their respective fields..That list would also contain numerous others who are unheard in the outer world ...
It is the level of excellence that they have brought into their respective fields that attracts us ...

And was wondering what really is excellence .. Is my mom as  excellent as Sachin ? Well , if look at the task that she is upto , I could with a lot of conviction say  that she is far more perfect in her field than what Sachin might have perfected in Cricket .To me my mom comes on top of all others in that list of excellent people...

I had an encounter with a cleaner in a Govt Hospital who refused to accept a 100 Rupee note that was given to him as a token of gratitude for cleaning up something which was really messy. He was quite angry on that incident  . For him it was his duty and he felt it (that he was presented with the money) as an insult . To me that is excellence ..I respect him more than the so called 'famous' people in my list of excellence..

Excellence is about perfecting the journey ....and that journey could be in many forms ...It could be the journey as a son , as a brother ,as a husband,as a  father or as a grandfather ... Or it could be the journey as a student, as an employee or boss ..it could be the journey as a sweeper or as a film star ..it could be the journey as a medical rep or as a doctor ...
No matter what the journey is , no matter what the destination is , excellence is about perfecting the journey ....Giving hundred percent to each of your performance ...It doesnt really matter whether the world knows or hails your excellence ...Mohanlal is always Mohanlal ..Prakashraj is always Prakashraj ...They give hundred percent to each of their performances , to each of the scenes they act ...and you remain wonderstruck watching them ...And my mom is a bigger wonder for me ... she has perfected the journey as a mother , as a wife and as an employee and has nearly perfected the journey as a daughter ...
She is my live textbook on excellence ..... (And I think my best post on this blog would be about her , how she makes me wonder struck each moment ...)

The journey has to be loved more than the destination ...And it is the journey that really matters more than the destination .. I wish I could master the art of perfecting the journeys , without too much worriying about the destination ...

What really matters in ones life is the number of nights one can go to sleep exclaiming that it was really a good day ...and if one has so much of such nights , one can really exclaim , lying on your death bed , that it was a good life ..it was a life worth living ...

A good read!

From Harsha ...

Really loved this talk and the subsequent ones ...For the first time , I hear somebody defining excellence...

"Excellence is about chasing you performance goals , and letting the results take care of itself ..."

"Make the process of achievement supreme and make the result irrelevant..."

"You perfect the process of preparation ...that's a wonderful journey on the path to excellence..."

"Excellence is about giving 100 percent each and every moment , every time. Excellence is a series of 100 percent in the preparation and performance."

"Great teams become  great teams  because the excel in the preparation. What you see on the ground is just the end result of all those that have gone before."

2012 the roller coaster year

I am incredibly happy to see how the scariest year of my life ends on a high note ...
what started out as a  lonely journey finds 5 more on the way ...the unknown path with an unknown destination ....and I am simply amazed by the profile of the people I am surrounded with ...OMG! it could not get better ....

2 branch toppers (not geeks , but people who can go and top the branch with 9.5+ when they want to and can score an incredibly low grade when they do not want to...and no points in guessing the GMAT score of one of them ,it's well above 770/800 )

3 rock stars of the college - people who defined the years in college ...who contested or adorned the top posts of the college council ...who went on to become the 'youngest' in the domains which they chose after college ...

I can't believe myself ...and clearly the stakes have gone higher ...people started to expect something big from the team ...and yea I could only promise that (to myself) , if we find a destination , it is gonna really big ...else it would be a silent death and there won't be any mediocre results...
